What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses guided relaxation, focused attention, and suggestion to help people access their subconscious mind and make positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.
How it works
During a hypnotherapy session, a trained hypnotherapist guides you into a state of deep relaxation (often called a trance). In this state you remain fully aware and in control, but your mind is more open to positive suggestions and new perspectives. Contrary to stage hypnosis, you cannot be made to do anything against your will—hypnotherapy is a collaborative process aimed at your goals.
What can hypnotherapy help with?
Hypnotherapy is used to support a wide range of issues, including:
- Habits & addictions — quitting smoking, reducing alcohol use, overcoming sugar or food addiction
- Anxiety & stress — general anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, exam stress, and relaxation
- Confidence & self-esteem — public speaking, low self-esteem, blushing, and performance
- Weight & eating — weight loss, emotional eating, and healthier habits
- Sleep & pain — insomnia, bruxism (teeth grinding), and pain management
- Emotional wellbeing — depression, trauma, PTSD, grief, and relationship issues
- Other areas — hypnobirthing, sports performance, IBS, and many other conditions
What to expect
Sessions are usually one-to-one and last around 45–90 minutes. The hypnotherapist will talk with you about your goals, then guide you into a relaxed state and work with suggestions and sometimes imagery or inner exploration. Many people find the experience calming and feel more motivated and focused afterwards. The number of sessions needed depends on you and the issue—some people see benefits in a few sessions.
Is it safe?
When practised by a qualified hypnotherapist, hypnotherapy is generally considered safe. You stay in control and can come out of the relaxed state at any time. It is not a replacement for medical or psychiatric care; for serious mental or physical health conditions, it is used alongside professional healthcare when appropriate.
